September 2013

Each fall as we begin the Institute’s class, I take the opportunity to think back over the years since the first class of 2000-2001.  There are so many good memories of backyard picnics at the beginning of each class, our annual summer picnic at which more than 100 of our members turn out and our November continuing education program.  Over and over again in conversations with people around Capitol Square in Columbus and as I visit other areas in the state, I find myself mentioning some member and taking pride in your many accomplishments.
We are always evaluating the program to be sure it continues to be relevant to those in each class.  Obviously things have changed over the 14 years and we want to keep pace with those changes.  One thing has not changed though – that is the inspiration I get from being with Institute members and the remarkable comments you make at your graduation dinner.  Are we making a difference?  I am confident we are as I watch you move ahead in your careers.
Some of the best suggestions we receive come from you.  Please do not hesitate to let me hear from you if you have ideas on how our leadership training could be improved.

Jo Ann

Here we go is September and we are beginning our 14th year! Hard to believe--but with all of your help, we have managed to work with over 250 women and, hopefully, helped them realize their own potential.

We look forward to seeing you all at the annual fundraiser on November 5 where we will all be entertained and educated by the incomparable Dr. Gordon Gee, President Emeritus of The Ohio State University.
We also look forward to seeing you at our continuing education event to be held November 21 in the afternoon. Details will follow in the next weeks.  Watch for the announcement.
WE ALSO HOPE YOU WILL TAKE THE TIME TO UPDATE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION FOR THE INSTITUTE.  As we work to try to recommend our graduates to positions on boards and commissions, for job openings, or for running for office, too often we find your information seriously outdated.  We have now made the directory searchable by category for our ease in seeking out certain professions or experience for these recommendations.  HELP US OUT…..UPDATE YOUR INFORMATION!
Looking forward to a great new year for the Institute.

Each newsletter we will hear from a Committee Chair.  This newsletter the column is from Carol Porter, Program Committee Chair:

There are a couple of times through the year that all the Institute Members are encouraged to come together to learn and socialize.  We laugh, commiserate, and update each other on whatever is on the “front burner” of our lives.  This summer’s social at The Governor’s Residence was a great evening of camaraderie and networking with so many Members in attendance.  We certainly hope you plan to attend the Continuing Education afternoon program on Thursday, November 21 and continue taking advantage of these quality events.
During these special events, we sometimes miss a “golden opportunity” to meet and chat with the women in the current class.  Therefore, come this November’s networking event the Program Committee members will be pinning a red carnation on each of our 24 students in the 2014 class.  Hope you schedule to attend the day’s program of events and meet these aspiring Ohio women.  You were in their shoes once upon a time……now is the time to welcome them into our Ohio family of leaders.
Thanks for your cooperation!
