October 2015

So much is going on with the Leadership Institute now.  Two events stand out – the first meeting of the 2015-16 class in September and the approaching November 6-7 Leadership Institute Retreat at Cherry Valley Lodge in Granville.
The class met for the first time at Betty’s home the night before the first class session on September 24.  Before the evening was over they had already begun to build relationships with each other and the following day’s session continued to offer them opportunities to get to know each other.  You will have a chance to meet the new class members at the Retreat.
We are fortunate to have a number of great speakers on the program for Friday evening and Saturday’s program at the Retreat.  Linda DiVall, who leads a well-respected DC polling firm, will join us on Friday evening.  Saturday morning’s program will feature Secretary of State Jon Husted, Lee Leonard, a long-time political reporter for the Columbus Dispatch who is the author of a biography of former Republican Governor Jim Rhodes and another about the politics of Capitol Square, a panel of our Institute grads some of whom are on next month’s ballot and others who have made the decision to toss their hat in the ring as a candidate in 2016.  They will discuss their campaigns, win or lose, and how they made the decision to run.  The Retreat will wrap up with a luncheon on Saturday where our featured speaker will be Dr. John Green, Director of the Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics at the University of Akron who is recognized nationally in the field of politics.
Please take a few minutes and send us your registration for the events at the Retreat.

Jo Ann

It is hard to believe we are beginning our sixteenth class this year!  It is very rewarding to see so much involvement by class members in their communities.  This is reflected in a remarkable number of Institute members running for elective office and being appointed to boards and commissions across the state.
While meeting the Institute’s mission of involvement in the larger community, our members’ personal growth is the most heartwarming to me, and I know, to Jo Ann. Members often tell us that they learned how much they could do through the Institute experience.
As we watch the growth of respect by the political community, as well as the public at large, we can only say to all of you, “well done” and keep on making a difference.
